What a great weekend. I think even those least interested in sport couldn’t help but feel lifted by Andy Murray’s astonishing display of athletic ability, mental toughness and shear genius at SW19 on Sunday. A long-awaited triumph like that is so good for the soul.
If only it happened more often. But then again it wouldn’t be so special. And it would be kind of sad to rely on sporting exploits of others for a feel good factor. Which I’m sure you don’t. One self-help to happiness is nature. Of all kinds of course. But there’s one particular flower that is perhaps better than all others at bringing a little joy, and that’s the rose.
These incredibly beautiful flowers don’t just impact your senses through your eyes. Roses and the concentrated extract from their petals (e.g. rose essential oil and rose water) also influence you through their glorious scent. So much so that in aromatherapy, the essence of rose petals is dubbed ‘the queen of oils’.
When we inhale essential oils, the airborne molecules travel up the nasal cavity and enter the limbic system. The limbic system is the part of the brain that stores and evokes sensory experiences, including memories and emotions. Given that roses are synonymous with summer, using rose scented products at any time of year is a brilliant way to bring some relaxing, hazy joy to your beauty regime.
Rose oil is wonderful in skin care as it tones, hydrates and promotes elasticity and cell regeneration, which is especially helpful for dry, sensitive or aging skin. In fact, numerous Essential Care customers with inflammatory skin conditions like acne rosacea have reported the positive calming and hydrating benefits of our Organic Rose Moisturiser and Organic Rose Petal Tonic. But rose is also balancing for oilier skin types. Revitalising, equilibrating, anti-aging and cheering – what more can we ask from our daily skin-care!
Like many good things, rose extracts are precious and expensive. Rose otto is the most costly essential oil of all (especially so in organic quality). It takes the petals from around 60 entire rose heads to yield just 1 drop of precious oil and similarly it takes a tonne of rose flowers to make the same amount of rose floral water. We source all our fragrant extracts of organic rose directly from family-owned farms with a long history of growing and distilling the finest quality roses.
Despite its price, rose’s understandable popularity is testament to the gentle power of rose oil to lift the spirits, fight depression and anxiety and provoke positive thoughts and cheerfulness. So for a quick lift on any day, transport yourself into a summer rose garden with a quick burst of Rose Petal Tonic into the air around you.
