So Zoe, why are you so keen on great sleep?
Almost everyone needs more sleep. Sleep is vital for our health and wellbeing. Without enough
quality sleep, we cannot function, we become irritable and stressed and over prolonged time,
we can suffer from long term health issues.
Other then wearing the right sort of sleepwear, how else can people support themselves to sleep really well?
Food can certainly plays a big part in how you sleep. Here are a few key pointers to help you
eat right and sleep tight:
Magnesium is an essential mineral that the majority of us are deficient in. It has exceptional
benefits to help us relax the nervous system, rid us from stress and improve our brain function.
High magnesium rich foods include nuts and seeds, dark leafy greens, such as spinach, beans ,
lentils and mackerel, avocados and whole grains.
Snacks before bedtime are also a good idea if you have troubles sleeping. Carbohydrate rich
foods are great because these foods increase the level of sleep inducing tryptophan in the
Protein is a little more difficult to digest , however you can get away with a small piece of
cheese and crackers or a dab of peanut butter on toast. Bananas are also very good as they
Hummus is another great choice as chickpeas are rich in vitamin B6, which is
important for the production of melatonin, the sleep hormone.
What about activity levels or busy minds - any tips for those?
A big factor causing sleep difficulties is stress. Lying down at the end of a busy day, instead
of ‘winding down’ A lot of us suffer from the polar opposite. Your brain starts to go on overdrive, worrying about tomorrow's meeting, or how you are going to pay next month's rent, causing a frenzied, anxious state.
If this sounds familiar perhaps mindfulness will help you. This is a form of meditation that focuses on breathing and being ‘present.’
Chose a calming focus like your breath, a word or a sound (“Om”), words (such as “relax” or“peace”). If you choose a sound, repeat it out loud or silently as you inhale or exhale.
Let everything go, and relax. As soon as you start to notice your mind wondering just
concentrate on your breathing or on your chosen calming focus.
This will help to calm your mind and will help you stop worrying about the past or future and just be present, it’s breaking your train of thought and evokes a sense of relaxation.
Any final advice?
Your environment of course is another factor. Try to keep your bedroom free of clutter and all
technology or at least shut everything down at least an hour before bedtime.
Your sleeping space should be a haven of tranquility, a place that induces feelings of calm.
Nothing beats a fresh, clean bed, if you’re looking for that crisp, soft feel, sheets should be
made from 100% cotton, to help your skin breathe. The same is true for your pyjamas - something super comfy, soft and organic should do the job ;).
