Odylique and Site Security – the Bug that Never Was

Our mission at Odylique by Essential Care is to become your most trusted brand for organic, sensitive skincare.  Like many other brands, our primary route to market (how we sell our products) is through our website.

In this exciting and progressive technical age, we understand how vital it is to have a website that not only looks great, but works well and is easy for our customers to use.  Recently we upgraded our platform and over the next six months, you can look out for some really exciting changes and updates in how we both look and work.   We value your input highly, so we regularly engage with our core and new customers to ask for improvements, suggestions and ideas on how we can make sure we meet your needs at every stage of the process of purchasing with us.

As digital consumers ourselves we know that part of this aim has to be prioritising security and safety.  No site is 100% hacker proof, so we work hard with our hosts to ensure our site stays clean, secure and safe for you to use without fear.  We believe it is this commitment that meant when Heartbleed hit in April, we checked immediately only to find out that our site was completely safe – phew!

With this in mind imagine our upset when a well known security scanner, Norton, started blocking our website to its customers, suggesting that we were not actually Essential Care, but a phishing risk.

First one, then a few, then many of our customers found this problem.  We went through our hosting – nothing.  We scanned the site and our firewalls.  Nothing.  Google checks came up clean.  We upgraded the site, checking again.  Still nothing.  Frustrated at watching our sales fall and our trust value, built up over years also suffer, we spoke to Norton who instructed us to tell our clients to report a false positive to them, hopefully stopping the problem.

Fast forward to TWO MONTHS later and finally this week we are finally able to confirm and Norton will finally report that we are NOT a phishing site.  It was a google analysis tool within our site that was triggering Norton’s (arguably over-sensitive) response to our site.  A re-assessment took just a few hours to show that we are not, nor have we ever been a risk to our customers.

We can’t apologise enough for the interruption this has caused but it gives us a very good opportunity to let you know something important.  We are not now, nor have we ever been a security risk.  If something happens to change that we will let you know openly and honestly.  Because that is what the most trusted organic brand would do.  And that will always be our aim.
