Make a zesty start to the New Year

Use nature’s juiciest botanicals to kickstart your new year!

January can make the most upbeat of people feel a little down in the dumps with the lack of Christmas cheer, failed New Year’s resolutions and back-to-work blues. Or maybe you’re so pumped up with energy for the coming year that you can’t sleep?! Either way, Mother Nature has plenty to offer to balance our moods, be it calming our souls or boosting our spirits. Over the next few days we’ll blog about some amazing properties of therapeutic organic essential oils and plant extracts, and bring you tips from Margaret Weeds, Essential Care’s aromatherapy guru to help put some zest into your New Year.

So to bring you into a new year with a bit of a zing, let’s start with some citrus oils. The citrus fruit family (e.g. bergamot, lemon, grapefruit, orange etc) is known for its delicious fresh, mouth-watering  flavour and aroma and its vitamin C rich juice, but did you know that the essential oil contained in their peel is  much more than a food flavouring? As well as being antibacterial and toning for the skin, they have great emotionally uplifting properties and are gentle and safe enough for all the family to enjoy.  Our refreshingly zesty grapefruit and lemon oils are so pure and refreshing they can practically make you grin when you inhale them! Oranges are synonymous with sunshine and the essential oil is recognised as being effective in boosting your mood and nurturing a positive state of mind.  An added smile inducer is that being certified organic, our citrus essential oils are guaranteed to have been extracted from fruit peel which has not been sprayed with chemicals!  Grapefruit is a key ingredient of our ‘Revive’ essential oil blend - a brilliant product for revitalising your body and mind – and is combined with orange in our equally uplifting and skin toning Bump Butter for pregnant mums.

Inhaling citrus oils either from a tissue or within a skincare preparation can help to de-stress and eliminate toxins... perhaps lingering from seasonal festivities! How does all this work? When you inhale citrus essential oils, the aromatic molecules connect with the part of the brain which controls the hormone and endocrine system, triggering a reaction to modify and balance their function. In addition, when applied to the skin, citrus essential oils go to work cleansing, stimulating and detoxifying. This is why citrus oils are such a valuable ingredient in cleansers and toners. We use the finest organic Sicilian lemon essential oil in our Lemon & Tea Tree Facial Wash for normal-oily skin and in our Ylang Ylang and Orange bodywash the fusion of flowers and fruit gives an aroma reminiscent of Mediterranean orange orchards.

For a delightful combo of all our citrus oils, Organic Citrus Fruit Tonic is not just a great skin toner and reviver but equally effective as a fragrant room spray either for relieving tension and mental fatigue or simply to freshen the air.

Citrus oils are one of nature’s multi-taskers - not only are they great in skincare products, but they’re also incredibly useful to have around the house. A few drops added to water makes an effective non-toxic surface cleaner ideal in the kitchen around food and children.

On a quality note, we always select essential oils distilled from the current season’s harvest.  Citrus oils have a shorter shelf-life than other essential oils, so this is particularly important to ensure their fresh, zesty aroma and the full benefit of their vibrant nature.

Many citrus fruits are in season at this time of year, so if you’re partial to them, snack on satsumas and clementines, breakfast on grapefruit for a metabolic boost and squeeze lemon juice in your tea or hot water with honey to soothe colds and sore throats for a healthy dose of juicy vitamins!
