Yesterday I met a lovely journalist from Japan. She had asked me to show her a selection of organic skincare and I couldn't help but include the "full" introduction to our organic beauty range: eating the Coconut Candy Scrub. I felt slightly cruel as she said she hadn't had any lunch, so a mouthful of our Scrub probably gave her a bit of a sugar hit. But then it does taste good. Any way, it gave me the idea of telling the history of this rather unique product.
Coconut Candy Scrub came into being as the result of one of our customer survey questions: Which new products would you like us to create? So you are actually the origin of our Coconut Candy Scrub!
Margaret must have been in culinary mode when she formulated it as the ingredients began to take on a particularly foodie theme. Cocoa butter... coconut fruit... poppy seeds...sugar, in fact all the ingredients are pretty tasty as well as edible. (So I wasn't being that cruel to this poor journalist and in fact when we launched the Scrub at an exhibition in the spring of 2009, we served it up on biscuits too!) The daring (of which there were eventually many) tried it and agreed it was pretty yummy. It went on to win the award for Organic Bodycare Product of the Year in 2009. In all seriousness, organic bodycare ingredients should be by and large good enough to eat. We certainly use a lot of Essential Care raw materials in cooking.
Sugar is actually most healthy for you when applied to the skin. It is rich in glycolic acid which helps stimulate and rejuvenate skin cells. (This is also particularly ethical sugar as it is both certified organic and Fairtrade.) We use it in our Maca Mask (ground into finer particles as it’s for the face) for the same reason. Poppy seeds in the Coconut Candy Scrub also add to the natural exfoliating action and the shea butter, coconut oil, and cocoa butter provide nutrient-rich moisture to leave your skin silky smooth.
If you fancy a different kind of Scrub you can also use our Honey & Oat Soap (despite the recurrent food theme we wouldn’t however recommend eating soap...). Coconut Candy Scrub makes a fab Christmas present and it’s on offer at the moment at £19 (a saving of £9 on the usual RRP).
